Continuing Education In Healthcare: How Northwest AHEC Can Help You Reach Your Education Needs

Jul 2, 2026 12:00:00 PM / by Brooke Kochanski

Maintaining clinical excellence in today's evolving healthcare landscape requires access to high-quality, evidence-based continuing education that fits your professional schedule and addresses the unique challenges of primary care and rural practice.

Why Continuing Education Matters More Than Ever for Healthcare Professionals

The healthcare landscape continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace, with new clinical guidelines, treatment protocols, and evidence-based practices emerging regularly. For physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physician assistants, and allied health professionals, maintaining clinical competence is not just about meeting licensure requirements—it's about providing the highest quality care to the patients and communities who depend on your expertise. In primary care settings, where providers often serve as the first point of contact for diverse patient populations, staying current with the latest clinical best practices is essential to delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care.

Continuing education serves as the bridge between foundational training and ongoing professional excellence. As healthcare delivery models shift, reimbursement structures change, and patient needs become increasingly complex, healthcare professionals must continually expand their knowledge base and refine their clinical skills. This is particularly important for those serving rural and underserved communities, where providers often manage a broader scope of practice and face unique challenges such as limited specialist access, resource constraints, and complex social determinants of health that impact patient outcomes.

Quality continuing education does more than fulfill mandatory credit hours—it empowers healthcare professionals to enhance patient safety, improve clinical outcomes, and advance healthcare quality improvement initiatives within their organizations. By engaging with evidence-based educational content tailored to primary care challenges, providers can develop the competencies needed to address emerging public health concerns, implement innovative care delivery models, and contribute to the sustainability of healthcare systems in the communities they serve.

Future Healthcare Professionals Explore Careers Through ACHS Camp Med

Jul 1, 2026 3:13:53 PM / by Brooke Kochanski posted in health careers, camp med, catawba county, alexander county

This summer, rising ninth-grade students from Alexander Central High School participated in an exciting week of healthcare exploration through ACHS Camp Med June 1st-4th. Throughout the four-day program, campers gained firsthand exposure to a variety of healthcare careers, developed practical skills, and connected with healthcare professionals across the region.

715485582_1417962560136014_1346434569373933610_nA Strong Start to Healthcare Exploration

Camp Med began with students discovering healthcare career pathways through a career match activity and career research in Xello. Campers explored the education, skills, and opportunities associated with a wide range of healthcare professions, helping them identify potential future career interests.

Students then traveled to the Catawba Science Center for the popular Sick Science program. Through hands-on activities, they examined bacteria, fungi, and parasites under microscopes, evaluated symptoms, performed flu tests, and investigated how diseases spread through an epidemic simulation. The day concluded with time to explore the Science Center’s exhibits, reinforcing scientific concepts through interactive learning experiences.

Learning from Healthcare Professionals

On the second day, students heard from healthcare professionals representing various areas of patient care and public health. Guest speakers included:

    • Kaitlyn Graves, Alexander County Health Department
    • Caroline Sawyer, ACHS Athletic Trainer
    • Alice Layne, RN, Medi Home Health
    • Abby Terry, NICU Nurse

These professionals shared insights into their careers, educational journeys, and daily responsibilities, providing students with valuable perspectives on the many pathways available within healthcare.

Campers also visited Valley Nursing Center, where they learned about careers in long-term care, interacted with residents through activities, and gained a deeper understanding of patient-centered care. The day concluded with hands-on healthcare activities led by ACHS Health Science teachers Lauren Mull and Kristen Jolly, allowing students to build foundational healthcare skills.

Day three gave participants a unique opportunity to see healthcare in action during a tour of Iredell Memorial Hospital. Students visited several departments, including:

    • Emergency Department
    • Radiology
    • Surgery
    • Labor & Delivery
    • Laboratory

They also learned about the critical role of Respiratory Therapy and how multidisciplinary healthcare teams work together to provide quality patient care. The experience offered an inside look at the many professionals who contribute to patient outcomes and highlighted the diverse opportunities available in the healthcare field. Shout out to the staff at Iredell Memorial Hospital for providing such an engaging and informative experience.
