That’s why Northwest AHEC is proud to offer the 2025 Aging Well Conference , a program designed to empower healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools to support aging individuals in leading healthier, more fulfilling lives. This activity focuses on advancing the knowledge and skills of healthcare providers in rural western North Carolina, particularly in geriatric care, addressing the unique healthcare needs of older adults. With a blend of individual and group presentations, panel discussions, and demonstrations, the activity brings together diverse perspectives of healthcare experts, researchers, government officials, social service providers, as well as older adults and family caregivers.

Healthy aging — and finding ways to age well — is the focus of the first Appalachian State University Aging Well Conference, to be held May 16 and 17 at the Levine Hall of Health Sciences in Boone. The event is sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. 

The 2024 Aging Well Conference is focused on healthy aging for the older adult. It is important for health professionals to meet the needs of our aging society.

On May 19th, 2023, geriatric care professionals from across our region descended upon Village Inn Event Center in Clemmons to attend the highly anticipated 2023 Geriatrics Conference hosted by Northwest AHEC. The air buzzed with excitement as attendees finally had the opportunity to meet face-to-face after years of virtual events due to the pandemic.

Governor Roy Cooper proclaimed that May is Older Americans Month which is wonderful as we have our Geriatric Conference coming up! There is still time to register.

What will North Carolina's population look like in coming years? NC ranks ninth nationally in population aged 65 and older and has undergone significant demographic changes in the 21st century. Assessing and understanding the demographic changes and their implications will be critical in addressing age-related issues, catalyzing change, and preparing for the future of North Carolina.

To meet an identified gap for clinical team members in ambulatory / primary care, Northwest AHEC developed an interactive, online, self-paced accredited program on the topic of Falls Screening, Risk Assessment and Care Planning.

Falls Prevention Awareness Week is a national health campaign observed on the first day of fall to increase awareness around falls health and injury prevention.
