Camp Med, a program offered at no charge to students in Wilkes County interested in learning about careers in the medical field, is available again this summer.

Camp Med is funded and sponsored by Northwest Area Health Education (AHEC) of Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem. Northwest AHEC is one of nine regional Area Health Education Centers of the N.C. AHEC program.

Students have a choice of attending the virtual Camp Med along with or in lieu of the in-person Camp Med, said a Northwest AHEC spokesman. For either, they need at least a 2.5 grade point average. Camp Med is open to students in public or private schools or home-schooled students.

The in-person version of Camp Med is June 17-21. It’s available to students currently in ninth through 12th grades. The spokesman said students in the in-person program only have to provide transportation to and from Wilkes Community College’s Herring Hall on Oakwoods Road in Wilkesboro or Wilkes Medical Center in North Wilkesboro.

The virtual Camp Med is completely independent and self-paced, said the spokesman. It consists of five modules and is June 1 to July 31. The virtual camp available to students currently in eighth through 12th grades.

All Camp Med options are free, but space is limited “so the sooner students apply the better,” the spokesman said. The deadline for applying is March 15.

The spokesman said Camp Med’s objectives are exposing students to healthcare careers; helping students understand healthcare challenges; engaging students with healthcare career-related activities; and helping students examine local healthcare opportunities.
