A problem long-associated with developing countries, food insecurity (FI) – the lack of adequate access to food – can contribute to higher infant mortality rates even in this country, according to a study conducted by scientists at Wake Forest School of Medicine.

On behalf of the entire Northwest AHEC team, I welcome you to the 2020-2021 Annual Report. The past year has looked quite different than many in our 50-year history, full of unique challenges and obstacles to facilitating the education and growth of health care professionals.

At the close of each session of the North Carolina Lactation Educator Training Program (NCLETP), the learners are challenged to go out and make a difference in their community using the lactation knowledge they acquired over the seven days of the course.

The UNC Greensboro School of Nursing has been awarded an educational mobility grant to support its Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. The one-year grant for $97,950 will support the collaborations that the RN-BSN program has with regional community colleges, the Northwest Area Health Education Center (AHEC), and the North Carolina AHEC.

The Southern Trans Health and Wellness Conference is designed to highlight best practices, innovative research and authentic community partnerships to center the lived experiences of impacted populations and to support the health, racial equity, equality and wellness of transgender, non-binary, intersex and gender-expansive communities.

The Northwest AHEC Practice Support Team is committed to promote understanding and improve the orientation of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) for North Carolinians. In order to support these goals, we will share a publication on SDOH each month on our Practice Support Blog.
