The 2026 North Carolina Annual STI Update was held virtually on March 25, 2026, providing an evidence‑based update on sexually transmitted infections, HIV prevention, and viral hepatitis trends affecting North Carolina and the region. The activity drew 889 participants from Allied Health, Behavioral Health, Health Careers, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and related disciplines, demonstrating strong interdisciplinary engagement. Participation spanned 98 of North Carolina’s 100 counties and included attendees from Alabama, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, reflecting broad statewide and regional reach.
Educational sessions addressed emerging and evolving challenges in STI and sexual health care. Topics included multidrug‑resistant and emerging STIs, with updates on gonorrhea resistance, mpox epidemiology and management, sexually transmitted dermatophyte infections, and Mycoplasma genitalium. Additional sessions explored the vaginitis spectrum, emphasizing vaginal dysbiosis, advances in diagnostic testing, and evidence‑based management of bacterial vaginosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis. Dermatologic considerations relevant to STI and HIV care were highlighted through a case‑based approach to diagnosing infectious and non‑infectious rashes in outpatient settings. Advances in HIV prevention were also featured, with a focus on long‑acting injectable PrEP, including North Carolina–specific epidemiology, comparison with oral PrEP options, patient selection, and real‑world implementation considerations.
