State-of-the-Art Pediatric Trauma Care in North Carolina: A Comprehensive Overview

As the only four Pediatric Trauma Centers in North Carolina verified by the American College of Surgeons, we are committed to providing state-of-the-art care for injured children. Each of our four Trauma Programs offers the many multidisciplinary services that focus on the goal of returning children and their families to the highest quality of life after injury. Together, the four Trauma Programs comprise the state’s premier sites for the evaluation, stabilization, treatment and care of children who have experienced a traumatic injury. Our providers are engaged and passionate in continuous improvement in care and outcomes for the leading cause of death in children.   • Discuss the significance of c-spine immobilization based on mechanism of injury in the pediatric population.
  • Explain strategies to minimize radiation exposure in pediatric trauma patients.
  • Review pediatric trauma protocols for laboratory studies and frequency.
  • Implement the principles of pediatric readiness in daily practice and operations.
  • Apply blood administration concepts for pediatric trauma resuscitation using a case study.
  • Discuss tourniquet utilization principles for hemorrhage control.
  • Discuss LGBTQ+ suicide risk and protective factors on both the individual and community level.
  • Explain the importance of inclusivity and intersectionality as it relates to advocacy.
  • Recognize patterns of injury related to improperly restrained children and abusive head trauma.
  • Explain radiation risks and mitigation strategies as they apply to pediatric trauma patients.
  • Discuss the relevance of substance misuse and acute stress in the pediatric trauma population.
  • Review pediatric substance misuse and acute stress screening tools.
  • Apply holistic healing principles to care practice of pediatric trauma patients and their families.
