Treating and preventing pediatric obesity is not about cutting calories and increasing exercise. In this 5-part series, developed by the pediatric weight management experts at Brenner FIT®, participants will learn new, effective skills to help their patients and families makes positive health changes in a safe, kind and family-centered way. - Course 1: Laying the Foundation - we will identify factors leading to increased childhood obesity rates. In addition, we will review the research and discuss why pressuring and restrictive feeding practices do not work. Lastly, we will understand the importance of taking the focus off of weight and what patients “should” be eating.
- Course 2: The Brenner FIT Approach to Feeding Children - we will identify and summarize a non-pressuring approach to feeding children. We will explain the both the parent's roles and the child's roles of feeding and demonstrate how to apply the approach.
- Course 3: Weight Bias and Do No Harm - we will understand and learn to weight bias. In addition, we will identify the potential impacts of focusing solely on weight as an outcome and review tools to create a supportive and inclusive patient experience in your practice or organization.
- Course 4: The Brenner FIT Approach to Activity with Children - we will understand why pressuring children to be active backfires, and will present a non-pressuring approach to activity. We will explain the parent's roles and the child's roles of activity and demonstrate how to apply the approach.
- Course 5: Putting Concepts into Practice - we will recognize how this approach works for all children, not just children with weight concerns. We will discuss the 2023 Pediatric Clinical Practice Guidelines. Finally, we will discuss how to get started implementing this approach into your practice or organization.
