Students from Hickory City Public Schools and Newton-Conover City Schools are participating in Camp Med this week

This week, students from Hickory City Public Schools and Newton-Conover City Schools are participating in Camp Med – a program sponsored by Catawba Valley Health System and Northwest Area Health Education Center in association with Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Camp Med is designed to identify, recruit, educate, and prepare high school students for careers in health professions. CVHS began hosting the program in 2017 with students from Catawba County Schools, and has since expanded the program to include all three local school systems. During Camp Med, students partake in a tour of Catawba Valley Medical Center, listen to discussions with CVMC Healthcare personnel, receive CPR/AED and First Aid Training, discover college planning resources, and more.

During yesterday’s Camp Med activities, students visited the ValleySim Hospital at Catawba Valley Community College. ValleySim Hospital is a simulated healthcare facility for education and training. During the trip to the simulated hospital, students learned proper emergency management for traumatic wounds, experienced the size and weight of premature babies in comparison to full-term babies, got to use a robotic surgical assistant, and checked and recorded simulated patients’ vitals.
