The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Nurse Refresher Course is online and self-paced, helping you continue to balance work, life, and your career.
This program was designed for you! Return to nursing or reactivate your license with NC AHEC's RN Refresher Program. Upon successful completion of both the didactic and clinical portion of the course, participants are eligible to apply for reinstatement of their nursing licenses through the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
In the past three years, over 360 nurses across the country have graduated from the program. Seventy-five percent of those who desired a job in nursing started a new position.

NWAHEC Nursing RN Refresher 2020-2021
The RN Refresher program at Northwest AHEC effectively adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic and the lack of clinical placement availability in the first and second quarters of FY21. During the third and fourth quarters of FY21, seven students completed their clinical experiences and have reentered the nursing workforce. Five students completed their clinical experiences at Wake Forest Baptist Health and two at Novant Health. Nine students have completed theory modules during the fourth quarter and are preparing for their clinical experiences. In FY21 NWAHEC had 44 accelerated and traditional RN Refreshers.
History of the Program
The NC AHEC Registered Nurse (RN) Refresher Program was developed in the late 1980s in response to an ongoing nursing shortage. Between 1990 and 2012, more than 3,400 nurses enrolled in the RN Refresher Program offered through each of the nine regional AHECs and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Almost 2,500 of those enrollees completed the didactic portion of the program, and 1,650 also completed the clinical component. Upon successful completion of both the didactic and clinical portion of the course, participants are eligible to apply for reinstatement of their nursing licenses through the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
