This virtual meeting is designed to familiarize attendees with current understanding of the etiology and treatment options for selected unmet cancer and treatment related symptoms, toxicities and CCDR challenges. It will also review the current and planned studies developed by the Wake Forest NCORP Research Base addressing these issues.

Objectives

  • Discuss the role of using a statin as a cardioprotectant in patients receiving anthracycline chemotherapy.
  • Discuss the potential benefits of telemedicine approaches to managing mental health in rural cancer survivors.
  • Understand the rationale for using an ACE inhibitor to prevent radiation induced neurocognitive toxicity.
  • Understand the burden of and treatment options for patients with cancer-related pain.
  • Describe the various physiologic causes of fatigue in breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy including the potential cardiovascular etiologies for this fatigue syndrome.
  • Summarize the rationale for using fractionated radiosurgery to decrease local brain toxicity in patients with brain metastases receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors.
  • Describe the potential impact of myopenia on chemotherapy toxicity and survival in older adults with metastatic colorectal cancer.
  • Evaluate the role of EHR-based cardiovascular health assessment tools in the care of cancer survivors.
  • Understand issues related to disparities and underserved populations that affect enrollment onto, and compliance with, cancer and cancer therapy related clinical trials.
